Congressional candidate Blair Walsingham calls on Congress to act immediately to pass emergency economic stimulus legislation that puts money directly into the hands of individual American citizens in response to the growing COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.
“The majority of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, some day to day, and until an unconditional economic stimulus fund is put into the hands of working class citizens, this virus will continue to spread regardless of who can afford to stay home. Sickness shows no prejudice,” Walsingham says. "If we can bailout the banks, we can bailout everyday citizens."
The steady stream of income would empower families to be more adaptable and resilient through the current pandemic. It would help prevent bankruptcies, foreclosures, and small business losses. It would allow hourly workers flexibility to stay home when sick without losing income, and it would help cover the cost of medical care for the 650,000 uninsured people in Tennessee, according to Walsingham.
“This is a pivotal moment in our history. How we deal with this crisis paves the way for the next one, which inevitably will come. Our lives have value far beyond our daily jobs. It's long past time to put our health and safety as the number one priority.”
Walsingham says that while a short-term stimulus would mitigate some of the worst effects of the current pandemic, a long-term solution to the challenges of poverty, job loss, chronic illness, addiction, suicide, and is still needed. A similar, permanent unconditional income for every American citizen would equip individuals, families, and communities to find unique solutions to these problems.
Universal Basic Income is Walsingham's signature campaign proposal.
