Press Release: Blair Walsingham Becomes the Only Democratic Candidate in the Race for the TN 1st Congressional District Seat

EIDSON, Tenn., June 24, 2020. -- Blair Walsingham is now the only candidate in the August 6th Democratic race for Tennessee’s 1st District Congressional seat. Former candidate Larry Smith announced today he is dropping out. That means Walsingham will face the winner of the GOP primary which now includes 15 candidates.
“I’m honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee from the 1st District,” said Walsingham. “But this is not about party politics. It’s about economic development, good paying jobs, quality healthcare and providing our kids with a good education,” she added.
“The current GOP Congressman Phil Roe has spent the last 12 years making a career out of politics while the district still continues to suffer from high unemployment, a lack of healthcare and good schools,” said Walsingham. “Obviously, he’s more interested in making money from the COVID crisis, than actually working for the people. The people are demanding real change that puts money in their pockets, not the pockets of politicians.”
Recent news reports say Roe admitted that he has bought and sold hundreds and thousands of stocks in companies affected by the coronavirus.
“We need a representative who cares more about the voters than he does about his stock portfolio and his bank account,” Walsingham said. “As a small business owner, the mother of 4 and a concerned citizen, I understand the struggles voters are facing in these tough economic times and that’s why I’m running.”
Walsingham’s campaign is focused on healthcare, financial security and improving education.
Regarding Smith’s withdrawal from the race, Walsingham said, “Larry is a good man and I respect his decision to drop out of this race. I believe voters are looking for a candidate who shares their values - East Tennessee values, American values.”
The Tennessee Democratic Primary will take place on August 6. If elected in November, Walsingham would be the first woman elected to a full term representing District 1.
